CSR That’s a Strategy, Not a Press Release

CSR That’s a Strategy, Not a Press Release

For a lot of firms, CSR is a page on the website and a photo of the team planting trees once a year. That isn’t a strategy, it’s decoration. And the audiences it’s meant to impress have become very good at telling the difference.

Why performative CSR now backfires

There was a time when a nicely worded values statement was enough. That time has passed. Clients, talent and referrers have seen enough greenwashing to be sceptical by default, and a hollow CSR claim now does active harm: it signals either that you don’t mean it, or that you haven’t thought about it hard enough to do it properly. Both are worse than saying nothing. Performative CSR isn’t a neutral tick-box; it’s a credibility risk.

What strategic CSR actually looks like

Strategic CSR starts from what your firm genuinely does and genuinely believes, and builds outward from there, rather than bolting on a cause that has nothing to do with you because it photographs well. It’s specific, it’s consistent, and it connects to how you actually operate: how you treat people, who you work with, how you make decisions, what you refuse to do. It shows up in the business, not just on the About page. The test is simple: could a competitor copy your CSR statement word for word and have it be equally true? If so, it isn’t strategy, it’s wallpaper.

Why it’s a competitive advantage for professional services

In professional services, technical competence is assumed. Nobody chooses a law firm, an accountancy practice or a consultancy on the basis that it can do the work, that’s the price of being in the room. So the decision gets made on other things: trust, fit, and increasingly, shared values. A firm with authentic, demonstrated CSR has something its beige competitors don’t, a reason to be chosen that has nothing to do with the assumed baseline of doing the job well. That’s not soft positioning. In a market where competence is a given, it’s some of the hardest-nosed differentiation available.

The authenticity test

The line between strategic CSR and greenwashing is authenticity, and it’s not subtle. Authentic CSR is something you’d do whether or not it appeared in your marketing, the marketing simply communicates what’s already true. Performative CSR exists for the marketing and falls apart the moment anyone looks closely. Having spent years on the governance side of the table as a trustee and Non-Executive Director, I can tell you the people assessing your firm can spot the difference almost immediately, and they remember which one you were.

Done properly, CSR strategy development turns what you already believe into a genuine, defensible advantage. Done as a press release, it’s a liability with good intentions. The difference is whether you mean it, and whether you’ve built it into the business or just onto the website.
